India vs Pakistan, Asia Cup 2023 Highlights: Match called off due to rains, here’s what will happen to points

In a much-anticipated encounter at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy, arch-rivals India and Pakistan locked horns during the Asia Cup 2023. The stakes were high, with memories of their previous one-day clash at the 2019 ODI World Cup still fresh, where India triumphed over Pakistan by a convincing 89-run margin. However, the Babar Azam-led Pakistani side, currently the number 1 ranked international team, promised to provide a formidable challenge. The inaugural match of Asia Cup 2023 had seen Pakistan secure a resounding victory against Nepal, driven by centuries from skipper Babar Azam and Iftikhar Ahmed, along with a stellar bowling performance by all-rounder Shadab Khan.

India vs Pakistan, Asia Cup 2023 Highlights

Key Highlights of Ind vs Pak, Asia Cup 2023:

Rain-Interrupted Start: The clash began on a defensive note as rain disruptions halted the match proceedings twice. Shaheen Afridi, living up to his reputation, struck early with back-to-back wickets of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

Haris Rauf Strikes: The Indian innings faced another setback when Haris Rauf dismissed Shreyas Iyer. Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan then adopted a cautious approach in an effort to stabilize the innings. However, Haris Rauf struck again, removing Shubman Gill.

Hardik Pandya’s Composure: Stepping up with composure, Hardik Pandya joined Ishan Kishan, and the duo forged a crucial partnership to steer the Indian innings.

Crucial Wickets Fall: Ishan Kishan’s departure, courtesy of Haris Rauf, was followed by Shaheen Afridi’s dismissal of Hardik Pandya. Subsequently, Ravindra Jadeja and Shardul Thakur also made their way back to the pavilion.

Bumrah’s Fightback: Jasprit Bumrah showcased resilience, contributing with crucial runs to propel the Indian innings to a competitive total of 266. However, the rain returned after the first innings, leaving the outcome uncertain.

Ind vs Pak Live: India’s Struggles Against Shaheen Afridi

India’s batsmen struggled against left-arm pacers yet again, with Shaheen Shah Afridi wreaking havoc. In an impressive spell, Shaheen Afridi accounted for the wickets of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, and played a pivotal role in restricting Team India’s total during the Asia Cup 2023 clash.

Historical Struggles: This isn’t the first time Indian batters have faced challenges from left-arm pacers. Whether it was Mitchell Starc and Mitchell Johnson during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 semifinals, Mohammed Amir in the ICC Champions Trophy 2017 final, Trent Boult in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 semifinals, or Shaheen Afridi in the T20 World Cup 2021 group stage, Indian batters have often succumbed to these bowlers, particularly in the powerplay phase of the innings.

Ind vs Pak Live: Rain Interruptions and DLS

The India-Pakistan clash was marred by repeated rain interruptions. After India posted a total of 266 with contributions from Ishan Kishan and Hardik Pandya, rain once again disrupted the proceedings. According to the latest reports, umpires were set to inspect the pitch at 9:00 PM, with the Duckworth–Lewis–Stern (DLS) method likely to come into play. This method typically results in a reduction in overs and a revised target for the chasing team, which could make for a thrilling and unpredictable conclusion to this highly anticipated match.

Asia Cup 2023 Schedule

After a tussle for months between the Indian and Pakistan cricket boards, the official schedule of the Asia Cup was finally released on Wednesday. Pakistan retained the hosting rights but will stage only four of the 13 matches in this biennial competition. Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Nepal are the other teams in the field for this ODI competition.

The tournament will begin on August 30 with Pakistan facing Nepal in Multan. Three other matches will be held in Lahore, including one likely Pakistan Super 4 fixture on September 6. All the other matches will be played in Sri Lanka, three in Kandy and six in Colombo, including the final on September 17.

The big-ticket India-Pakistan round robin clash will take place in Kandy on September 2 and the expected re-match in the Super 4 stage is scheduled for September 10 in Colombo.

The commercial success of the competition hinges on the India-Pakistan showdown with a format tailor-made for them to clash at least twice; both are placed in the same group with the Associate side (Nepal qualified). Regardless of where India and Pakistan finish in the group stage, Pakistan will remain A1 and India A2, to meet India’s wish to play only at a neutral venue.

PCB pushed for the tournament to be played at least in a hybrid model, salvaging four matches from being moved out of the country. Whether this is a win of any sort for PCB is being questioned in Pakistan cricket circles. From the time BCCI made it clear last October that it would not play in Pakistan, PCB has seen three regime changes, each advocating a slightly different bargain from the other.

India-Pakistan friction has dominated the Asia Cup history. Of the 15 editions held since it began in 1984, the tournament has been played in India and Pakistan only once each. The only time the Asia Cup was held in Pakistan was in 2008. It was also the last time the Indian cricket team played there.

In a tweet, BCCI secretary and Asian Cricket Council president Jay Shah called the Asia Cup “a symbol of unity and togetherness binding diverse nations together.” From a cricketing standpoint, the tournament holds importance as its being played in an ODI format, serving as a dress rehearsal for the teams ahead of the World Cup starting in India on October 5.
